A CHORUS LINE AUDITION INFO

ROLES and ELIGIBILITY

  • Roles are open to students in grades 7-college age (rising 7th graders welcome).
  • All roles in this production are available to students.
  • There are 19 principal roles in this show, plus a small group of “cut dancers” who appear in the opening and the finale. Every cut dancer will understudy at least one principal role. Understudies for this show will get extra prioritized time in rehearsal and 2 understudy run-throughs.

TIME and PLACE

There will be two rounds of preliminary auditions. Preliminary auditions will include a 1-hour dance call PLUS individual vocal auditions (auditioners will sign up for both a dance call slot and a vocal slot). Auditioners will only need to attend one round of preliminaries.

  1. Saturday December 20, slots from 11am-4:30pm, at Korsa’s Aquatic Park Campus (2945 Bolivar Drive, Berkeley)
  2. Tuesday January 13, slots from 4pm-9:30pm, at Korsa’s Aquatic Park Campus (2945 Bolivar Drive, Berkeley)

WHAT TO PREPARE

  • A song/excerpt of a song in the style of the show – 1 minute or less. Please bring sheet music in the key you would like to sing in, double-sided and 3-hole-punched and in a binder.
  • A contemporary monologue that contrasts with your song – 1 minute or less.
  • There will be a dance/movement call, so please come dressed to dance. This means form-fitting, stretchy clothes and dance shoes or lightweight athletic sneakers. No Crocs, Uggs, or Doc Martens, please.
  • You will be asked to stay for the entire hour-long slot.
  • Want help preparing? Read our tips on How to Prepare for An Audition.

    VIDEO AUDITIONS

Video auditions will be considered, but it is strongly preferred that actors audition in person. If you need to submit a video, please follow these steps:

    • Important: please edit all the following elements together into ONE video file, so the team doesn’t have to watch multiple videos.
    • Record yourself performing the material listed above under “What to Prepare.”
    • Video guidelines:
      • Record yourself from at least the torso up, ideally in a room with good lighting (make sure you aren’t directly backlit)
      • Sing with a backing track, ideally piano-only (“karaoke” tracks often have heavy instrumentation and it can be hard to hear your voice), and play the track from a different device than the one you are recording with.
      • If you need help or have questions about recording your video audition, feel free to email our Casting Director (celeste@korsamt.org).
    • DANCE VIDEO: Please include a 30-45 second video of yourself performing choreo to music. The choreography should be in a musical theater/jazz style. If you have any special dance skills, such as tap or acrobatics, feel free to demonstrate in the video. At the beginning or end of the video, please tell us a little bit about your background in dance: any training you have previously had, dance roles you have done, or dance-heavy shows you have been in.
    • Upload your audition to a video-sharing website like Youtube, Vimeo, or Google Drive. Make sure the video permissions are set so anyone with the link can view.
    • Link to your video at the end of the audition form.

    CALLBACKS

    • Callbacks will be held on Saturday January 24 and Sunday January 25 (exact times TBD).
    • Callbacks will include reading and singing from the show.
    • If we need to see you for a specific role at callbacks, we will notify you within 1-3 days after auditions.
    • If you are not asked to come to callbacks, that does not mean you are no longer being considered for the show.
    • Not being able to come to callbacks makes it difficult for us to consider you, especially for a lead role – please do your best to be available for at least 1 of the dates!

    REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE DATES and LOCATIONS

Please click the link above to the Audition Info Form, which includes a rough schedule.

    CASTING PROCESS/TIMELINE:

    • Role offers will be sent out anywhere from 1-6 weeks after auditions.
    • After the cast is finalized, all students who auditioned will hear back from Korsa about whether or not they were cast. We ask that students and their families be patient in waiting for a casting announcement, and we promise we will let you know!
